It's almost like it's a course designed to take someone from zero knowledge in the subject matter to the basics in the subject matter.

I had a colleague who told me how he had a fellow student in his class who had no idea HOW a computer worked. She managed to turn the computer on... But that's it.

These must have been the same people that "designed" Kinja.

Not as bad as my world history 'buddy' I had freshman year in college. We were randomly partnered for some stupid paper about halfway through the semester. It's about WWII. I'm trying to gauge her knowledge asking random questions.

Then...the most unexpected question out of a person who had been alive in the US for 20 years and gotten into a decent four year institution.

"Wait? Nazis were real? I thought they were just in the movies...why would real people do all those terrible things?...are you sure?"

I thought she was joking. She wasn't. She did not graduate.

I've been at a client site conducting a training and asked the group to open their browser and load our software's webpage.

I got a question from one nice person: "What's a web browser?"

So I had to keep a straight face: "You can view web pages with it. An example is Internet Explorer"

Followup: "What's that?"

At this point, I should mention that the CIO of the client company was in the room and had a short fuse. He grabbed the person's laptop, threw it against the wall, breaking it, and fired them on the spot for incompetence.

Sensei: "Why don't we take a five minute break?"

Exactly. Programming is now a computer literacy course. There are several people in my Intro to C++ course who have never touched a computer in their life before this semester, and they're getting along fine after some basic coaching on how to use Linux. Then again, hardly anybody in this class has used Linux before so the playing field is pretty damn level.

Nah, I actually felt really bad for her. She was obviously failed by her primary/secondary school system. Came out of a very low income area that had a horrendous graduation rate and got in on a scholarship for disadvantaged people. Basically all she needed to do was show up and she'd pass. From what I gathered the teachers there didn't really do anything but babysit and if you showed up most days you'd graduate with high marks.

I made it a project to try to help her out. She was actually pretty sharp and picked up stuff very quickly, but outside of math she literally was at like a 4th grade level in all subjects. There's no way to get from 4th grade to college level in a semester. If she had been from somewhere else she would have sailed through.

She ended up moving back home and getting pregnant. The cycle continues.

I was in a programming class once and we had spent 2 days learning about ASCII. Towards the end of the second day this girl raised her hand and said "What are you ASKING? You keep talking about how you're going to be ASKING something, but you haven't really asked us anything. Is this something you will be ASKING on the exam?"

I also originally went to college to be a computer engineer (back in 2002) and on my first day of classes, this girl I went to high school with was in my Intro Programming class. She was super nice but had a bit of a reputation as an airhead. So I went over to talk to her after class and said "Wow, I didn't know you were that into computers or that you wanted to be an engineer." and she goes "Oh yeah, I like, talk on AIM all the time, and think the internet is just the best. I play some games sometimes. Computers are so awesome." I found out the following semester she'd switched her major to communications.

That's a shame. I stand by the fact that i'm glad she didn't graduate though. Not because I don't want her to "break the cycle" I'd love for that to happen - and I know people who did. I just don't agree with people graduating just because they came from a bad school system. If you don't know the material you can't graduate.

It's actually one of my biggest issues with affirmative action. People getting into schools they normally wouldn't be qualified for because of either the color of their skin or the are they came from. Unfortunately it sets them up for failure. Frankly, I had arguments with my sister while I was in college because she didn't understand the academic difference between her school and mine. I'm not saying her school was terrible, but there's a big difference from a 2000 student liberal arts school that no one's heard of and a Big Ten - Michigan State University education. I could have passed her school without studying (like high school). But it was a challenge at times for her. All that being said I'm sure an Ivy League school would have kicked my ass, I'm no genius haha.

Sometimes it's about preparation in lower primary/secondary school, sometimes it's about not putting in the work, and sometimes it's just about finding the appropriate level for the student.

I do wish the girl luck though.

Oh yeah, I agree it was totally appropriate she didn't graduate...just not 'good' because after involving myself there was nothing positive about the situation at all.

Her HS diploma and high marks devalued all HS diplomas

She took a freshman spot at a competitive university from someone who might have been prepared

The state wasted money putting her through a year of school she was incapable of passing with nothing to show from it

It destroyed her confidence and stole a year of her life

It wasted my and a couple really sympathetic professors and advisers time

All for what? So some folks who weren't even involved could say they were trying? It's baffling.

If she had gone into a trade school where everyone starts from scratch in their fields she would have done well in probably anything that she'd chosen. That's a vastly more appropriate place for disadvantaged students who aren't autodidacts. From there they can earn enough to get out of the trailer park or inner city. Then their kids will have a better school system and may be prepped for a 4 year university.

I contend that tossing unprepared students into situations where success is unlikely is actively harmful to their lives as well as to many others.
